Surrogate motherhood, also known as gestational surrogacy, is an arrangement in which a woman agrees to carry and give birth to a child on behalf of another individual or couple. The surrogate mother carries an embryo created from the intended parents' or donors' gametes (sperm and egg) via in vitro fertilization (IVF) or other assisted reproductive technology (ART).

There are two types of surrogate motherhood: traditional surrogacy and gestational surrogacy. Traditional surrogacy involves inseminating the surrogate mother with the intended father's sperm, either via artificial insemination or natural intercourse, resulting in the surrogate mother being both the biological mother and the gestational carrier. In gestational surrogacy, the surrogate mother carries an embryo that is not genetically related to her, created using the intended parents' or donors' gametes.

Surrogacy is a complex and controversial issue with ethical, legal, and social implications. Proponents argue that it provides a way for individuals or couples who are unable to conceive naturally to have a biological child, while opponents raise concerns about the commodification of women's bodies, exploitation, and the potential for harm to the surrogate mother and child. The legal status of surrogacy varies by country and can be subject to extensive regulation or even prohibited altogether.
